Walter

It’s ten to five and morning breaks anew
one foe with winter and its kind
my eyes that yesterday had view
now but look on feeble shine
of candles that I will extinguish
after one more sleepless night
after they have shed their light
on one more year almost relinquished

Oh woman! why am I alone?
Oh was that day so long ago?
how was it that I must forget?

Oh wish that we did never meet!
Oh wish I’d never known!
Oh wish I had no heart that cannot love but one!
